Rapper Remy Ma Arrested On Suspicion of Attempted Murder PDF Print E-mail
Written by OJ Fagbire

26-year-old Remy Ma, actual name Remy Smith, turned herself in to the police, who were seeking to question her in connection with the shooting of another woman outside a nightclub in the popular meatpacking district of Manhattan. She has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to reports from the officers.

Apparently an argument between Remy and a friend led to the shooting on Saturday evening. A call to 911 reported hearing gunfire, which led police to the scene. Once there they found the victim who named Remy Ma as her shooter. Officers found Remy's luxury vehicle crashed and abandoned about three blocks away from where the shooting occurred. The victim, 23-year-old Makeda Barnes-Joseph was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Remy's manager announced Saturday that the rapper would be unable to make a statement and referred all inquiries to Remy Ma's lawyer who had accompanied her to the police station in order to turn herself in.

Remy's attorney, Scott Leemon, made the comment, "I ask everyone to keep an open mind. Things are not always as they seem." He also reported that the arraignment was likely to be held on Sunday.

Sasha Tcherekoff is the owner of the nightclub where Remy Ma and Ms. Barnes-Joseph had been directly before the argument, and reported that a security video taped inside the club revealed the rapper and her friends, including the victim, having a pleasant time before leaving the nightclub. Police indicate that the altercation occurred about a block away from the "Pizza Bar."

Remy Ma was nominated in 2004 for a Grammy in connection with the hit song "Lean Back" that Remy performed with the Terror Squad. Remy was also the winner of the 2005 BET "Best Female Hip Hop" award.   Just last year, she released "There's Something About Remy" as a solo artist.
