MySpace Down – What Site Is Next?

UPDATE:  MySpace returned at approximately 9:27 AM – an outage of 30 minutes.

MySpace appears to be following in the footsteps of Amazon.com and appears to be down and unavailable for most of the world.

A traceroute performed from different locations finds that the host is ‘unknown’.  More interesting is that the domain record appears to have been updated earlier today.  While the ip addresses appear to be working – nothing is connected to the domain.

According to the domain lookup below – the domain was  was last updated on 8-Jun-2008 08:50:45 EDT.

Unlike Amazon, where shoppers will return to purchase an item, MySpace having such a large outage will result in significant lost revenue.

The rumor for Amazon.com is that it was taken down by a distributed denial-of-service attack which pointed directly to the load-balancing system.

The current MySpace situation appears to be either a massive mistake or a deliberate attack in the same nature as the recent Comcast hack.
